Comic Book Club Podcast
Been meaning to post this, but things have been so hectic I haven't been able to get to it until now. Last month, as some of you may recall, I was a guest on the Comic Book Club talk show thing held here in NYC, along with Chris Duffy. The CBC folks post podcasts of the shows, and if you have a care to, you can listen to Chris and I and some other folks bullshit about comics.

Here's the link I was given for those who are interested in this sort of thing:

http://www.popcultureshock.com/cbclub/?p=43

Listen at your own risk. Chris was a gentleman, I was on seriously low blood sugar and in a mood to be obnoxious on purpose for some reason. Some folks found my shenanigans funny, your mileage, as they say, may vary. My thanks to the CBC hosts for inviting me and not punching me in the jaw for some of my stupider comments and for constantly stepping on their lines, etc. I'm not a professional comedian, folks, I just ramble and die like one. That;s why I spend most of my time at a drawing board and not in front of a live audience.

"Have you ever been in a museum?"

This is hilarious. My friend was at this show and told me all about it, and he did not exaggerate.

I thought it was an entertaining night. Yeah, you were all over the place with some profanity. Yeah, I was a little confused by how soft your hands were when I shook it after all those masturbation jokes but I dug your points and opinions.

The hosts were at a loss for words in dealing with you. It reminded me of when Robin Williams went on the Dennis Miller show and Miller couldn't get a word in edgewise because he was too busy being blown away (not that Evan was running all over the place make masturbation jokes and saying "nanoo nanoo", folks. He's very articulate but the sound quality's awful).

I really had the potty-mouth on that night for some reason. I think it was the low blood sugar and the fact that I'd not been out of the house for a while and I just had less control of my faculties. I was also nervous, which might sound disingenuous, because I talk so much, and act out, but the nerves tend to cause that ion my case.

I actually apologized to the hosts for my rambling, and to Chris Duffy, for having to endure such a moron-mouth. Chris said he enjoyed it. Still, I'm kind of glad I never have to sit next to me, if you know what I mean. So why don't I change my behavior? Here's the sad thing: I try. I am like a talk-a-holic or something. Maybe I'm distantly related to Don Rickles or an outboard motor. I really try to reel it in. I'm a blabbermouth, as Ralph Kramden would blabber.

Thanks to Mr. Dorkin for being the voice of reason at one of these things! There's nothing wrong with being a fan and supporting the industry like the hosts of the show obviously are, but every once in a while, someone needs to come in and point out what an Eltingville-esque mutual appreciation society most comics podcasts really are. The kind of blind hero-worship that goes on in most of the podcasts is sooooo boring.

When Alex asked me "What were Liquid Man's powers?" and you said "Have you ever read a comic book?" That was funny. Yes, it was slightly uncomfortable at times, but they got an interesting show out of it. (And everyone sort of made peace by the end. I think!)

Sorry about the uncomfortable, I hope I didn't provide too much of it. I was a bit more antagonistic than I ever meant to be, but, I dunno, they kept giving props to those god-awful comics and I just have that sort of brain...I snapped back to my awful habits as a clerk at Jim Hanley's, criticizing everyone. Like my taste is so sterling. I do like the Dick Briefer Frankenstein, however...

I was at the show and it is true that it was a little uncomfortable at time. Still it was an interesting show. The best moment I thought was when you dissed Jim Starling Death of the New Gods and guessed the plot without even reading it.
It's a shame we didn't get to hear more of your seemingly unlimited knowledge of the comics industry. Have you ever thought of doing something like the Van Lente/Dunlavey Comic Book Comic?

I'm not familiar with that comic. Was the show really uncomfortable at times? Wow. I feel uncomfortable about making everyone uncomfortable. What's wrong with me? People invite you on a show and you give folks the willies. I guess I won't be back on that show. Oh, well.

And all Jim Starlin comics are pretty much the same. I just wish people would muck with their own universes (Dreadstar and whatever the hell) and not piss all over Kirby's stuff. But that's the fanboy in me. I don't understand the "we love these old characters and concepts, so let's fuck them all up and kill and dismember them" mentality. These kiddie characters were never built for this nonsense, it doesn't work except as fan-fiction, and even then the creators come off as disturbed children making creepy high school comics filled with violence and childish notions of sexuality. It's crazy, if you ask me.
