FCBD Signing @ Comic Book Jones NYC
This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day, blah blah blah.

I'll be signing comics (if anyone asks me to) and doing free sketches (ditto) from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Comic Book Jones shop here on Staten Island. It should be pretty laid back. If nobody wants anything I'm just going to sit on a couch and read comics for a while. Sarah will be dropping by late in the day, I goofed up and made plans for the signing without remembering it was the same day as a local event we wanted to take Emily to. Duh. So, the gals will drop me off like a ruined omelette at the comic shop and head back once they're done acting like normal people enjoying themselves to watch daddy talk horseshit about drawings of superheroes and talking ducks or whatever the hell..

(Today Emily told Sarah, "Daddy likes that place", when they left the comic shop, as if she understood completely what kind of sad person I am when in my element. She also sounded a little sorry for me, I bet. I am alone even in my own home. But now my home has a copy of Willie & Joe: The World War 2 Years by the great Bill Mauldin, so I am temporarily happy in my little fanboy purgatory. And actually, Sarah digs Mauldin as well. Still...from what Sarah told me, Emily said "Daddy likes that place" as if they were helping me out of a bar I had disappeared into since late afternoon, hiding the fact that I had been fired from my job at the firm weeks ago).

More information on the signing and the store here.

Energetic folks can hit up both Comic Book Jones and the Jim Hanley's Universe on the South Shore and potentially load up on free stuff like there's no Free Comic Book Tomorrow.

Bring the kids while you're at it. Or leave 'em at home, just make sure they have some water and something to eat handy or whatever. You could always leave the T.V. on, it's not like comics, kids love that stuff and it keeps 'em entertained for hours and hours.

You and me both, friend. Normally, I'd stay away from Free Comic Book Day, not to mention that the big Dallas Asian Fair is this weekend as well. Thankfully, Dallas has CAPE, which more than makes up for decades of lousy conventions (including the famed Dallas Flimsy Fairs, the former home of the Harvey Awards), and I'll be out there showing off carnivorous plants and other wonders. Hmmmm...it may be time to talk to some folks about doing a comic about carnivorous and prehistoric plants...

I love Up Front. Wouldn't blame you for holing up with Mauldin and pretending FCBD didn't exist.

I read that to my wife. She said, "Sounds familiar."

Dames. They don't know how lucky they are...

Um,I hate to sound like a twit, but Jim Hanley's Universe is NOT on the South Shore. It's in New Dorp. Which is Mid-Island. South Shore is like, South East Annadale, Woodrow, Prince's Bay...you know, the nicest part of Staten Island. (Though, I'm slightly biased)

I went to Free Comic Book Day once..err..maybe 3 years ago?(In the now-defunct Eltinvgille Comic Book Store) Unfortunately, I gave up on comics a month into infinite crisis. The only thing I'll ever spend 80 dollars a week on is two cartons of cigarettes, gas, Seven for All Mankind Jeans...you know, essential stuff.

Maybe I'll go to Free Comic Book Day this year (In the City, comic book stores on the island are kinda icky...) Or a sample sale at Bergdorf Goodman. Ooh, the choices!

Thanks for the correction, although getting things wrong about Satan Island is a-okay with me.

I'd have to say the New Dorp JHU and Comic Book Jones, which I bet you've not been to, are good shops and stack up nicely against most Manhattan shops. Certainly not icky in the least. Honest. Jones is new and gearing up on alt/indy stock, but it has the advantage over Manhattan joints of being clean and spacious, NYC shops are clunkhouses, even the better ones. The New Dorp JHU is going through fixture/layout renovations and is the heaviest-stocked shop on S.I. Anywhere else these stores would be held up as gold, friendly and low-key and stocked with a variety of stuff, as well as stuff for the kiddies and odd comics-related stuff for the general public. My only real complaint is the staff at both are not up on the art-side of the medium, but they are an affable bunch and they'll order stuff. And to be honest, the customers don't ask for much of the artsy stuff. what can you do, it is Satan Island. As for icky, I haven't stepped inside Krypton Comics since one depressing trek many years ago, from what I hear it's practically a superhero/Star Wars statue store with some Marvel/DC comics and an aging clientele. Not for me.

Cigarettes are a waste of time. Comics are too, but I prefer my plan of dying slowly from comics than dying slowly of cigarettes. To each their own.

What Emily actually said when we went to the car to wait (a song that was playing loudly was really bothering her) was "Daddy thinks it's fun in there." She did then admit that the kid-sized chairs, running space, "funny trash can" her Uncle Socko and his new puppy were in fact kind of fun for her too. And I'm fairly certain she was just making a statement of fact, not expressing pity. Of course, what she said about you later.....well, never mind.

Aw, Dorkin, you are still rad beyond belief. I'm going to try to become some kind of big shot billionaire, then I'm going to just hand you money to finish some more Hectic Planet stories. Wish me luck on the billionaire part!

But for real, I think Emily is going to grow up to love her dad, no matter what geekdom.

Every FCBD I have to pop into my local comic book store just for a few minutes in the early part of the day to check it out because the owner really goes all out - and aims squarely at walk-in traffic and parents with small kids - for whom FCBD should be aimed at.

Maybe its a French thing (its in Montreal), or maybe just good business sense, but he goes out of his way to make it a special thing - his wife makes a tray of baked goods, he has specials and gives away overstock - it's always PACKED.

I swear to freaking blablabla that the sight of happy kids with their parents leaving the store with a free Archie/Disney/Owly comic or whatever makes even the most cynical comic book geek's heart lighter.

And mine too.
