Had a nice time at the Free Comic Book Day celebration at Comic Book Jones. Signed a few things, did a few sketches, got to see an old friend of mine who I hadn't seen in a while. Picked up a few comics for Emily, she really likes Owly and enjoyed the Top Shelf book. The Tiny Titans book was lousy, script-wise, but she's only three and change so she doesn't 't know that. The art's cute, but what a dreary read, nothing there, threadbare and unfunny, with extended gags riffing on old fandom jokes like "Speedy" not being a speed character. Two pages for that gag. Sheesh. The strips make Li'L Jinx look like Little Lulu. The characters basically talk while walking down the street or sit at school desks. That might work in Peanuts, it blows dust here. And they adhere to current DC continuity so there's two Wonder Girls, which actually confused Emily, as she knows who Wonder Woman is and could handle one little version of her. When the blonde version shows up we were all confused, actually.  Bad, weak comic.

She wasn't crazy about the Disney book, unfortunately, Gyro Gearloose not being the most killer-endearing character, imho. Not enough Donald Duck for her tastes. Or mine, to be honest. I got a copy of the Hellboy/BPRD comic for myself, which I enjoyed. The Hellboy story is an odd choice, insofar as it would be fairly useless for new readers to geta hell of a lot out of, but folks familiar with the comic, and I guess the movie, might like it fine, like I did. It's a bit of business more than a story but nicely done, and it'll read well in a collection. The other two stories are serviceable and look good.

Otherwise, we've been busy with some stuff. I've been writing something for Mad,  I've found it difficult going, I feel like I'm working a bit stiff trying to mix my verbose (i.e., blabbermouth) "Dork" style with the more terse and direct Mad style, and there are some other things bugging me about my first draft. Hopefully editing and revising will make something decent of it.

We turned in a couple of gag panels for Nick Mag, another for Mad Kids. We're designing a Story Time segment for Yo Gabba Gabba!, which we also wrote. I'm finishing up another charity drawing tonight or tomorrow (dunno when the Hulk piece I posted a few weeks ago will be auctioned off, I better check in on that), then I have a Bart Simpson script for Bongo to finish up. And then I start on some scripts for Dark Horse on a project I've been hoping to get going for quite some time now. Yay.

Speaking of DH, the latest "issue" of Dark Horse Presents on Myspace should be uploaded sometime today, with a new 2-page Milk and Cheese strip in the mix. It's about Furries. Guess what? They make fun of them. Yay.

Back to work for me.

A local comic book store. In front of a large rack of free comics stands TROOPER221 (27) and THE GIZMO (7, going on 8). TROOPER221 points to a small comic book on the bottom display shelf.

TROOPER221
Hey, what about Tiny Titans, buddy? You like the Teen Titans.

GIZMO
That's not the Titans; that's dumb.

and....scene.

Which Hellboy did you get? One of the shops we went to was "kids only", but they had a Hellboy 2 MTI book and a regular Hellboy book, and the Gizmo wasn't interested in Hellboy, so I had to wait 'til we got to a decent shop, but they didn't have the MTI book.

Oh, and what's this crap about Iron Man & Hulk & Spider-Man being a real story, and the Iron Man & Hulk book just being previews for upcoming storylines and the movies? BOO, Marvel, BOO!!!! And yes, I realize I'm complaining about free comic books. I'm being "That Guy."

There's two Hellboy versions? I can't find any information on that. Have a link?

Because I've yet to been able to link my memory to the Internet...but one day, one day.

The one I got was this one. The one the boy refused to get I cannot find online. The lettering was gold, and it said Hellboy II: The Golden Army and had a bad ass rendition of Hellboy on it. Like I said, I tried to get he boy to take it, he wouldn't. Damn "Kids Only" FCBD stores.

I love Art and Franco, but I gotta back you up on the "Tiny Titans" book. It had perfect art for kids and would appeal to not a one of them. Hell, even I had to think for a minute to get some of the references and whatnot. What the hell group is this book supposedly being marketed to, 6-10 year olds with a vast knowledge of DC continuity?

The Hellboy book was fun. I also enjoyed the Atomic Robo one.

I picked up Hellboy: The Mole, Graphic Classics (with art by Anne Timmons, among others), The Death-Defying Devil (Bart Hill version and the origin(?) of the Claw), and the EC Comics Sampler.

I missed FCBD once again due to other commitments--my store is near work, which means it's 30 miles from home, and I spent so much time working outside that I didn't make it to the store two miles from home (there is a reason I shop at one and not the other).

When I saw the ads for "Tiny Titans," I looked at the roster they chose and thought about how parents could possibly explain some of the characters: "No, honey, he's not a robot, half his body got burned off when his Daddy made a mistake in the lab."
"She has an eyepatch because she pulled out her own eye when her Daddy told her to. What does 'Ravager' mean? Well..."
"That's Raven, and her Daddy is a demon, which is like a devil, okay? And if she loses her temper she'll turn into a demon too and kill everybody."
Yeesh.

I usually enjoy the Gyro Gearloose stories mostly for the visual gags with the little helper robot in the background of every other panel.

I only saw the Tiny Titans except from the FCBD site. When I saw it I was intrigued, but when I read it I was at a loss. It is so not funny that it seemed like you'd have to have really worked at making it not funny. I dunno how the rest of the book compared to that excerpt, but I hope they hadn't picked that bit because it was the best part.
