R.I.P. "The Little Girl"
For a few years now we've been feeding a stray neighborhood cat we eventually took to calling The Little Girl. She was actually a nasty little feral thing, hissing at anyone who came near her, even if you were feeding her, even after years of free food and water and treats and catnip. We could never get near her because she feared people so much and would run away (after hissing, of course), and we always wanted to catch her because she kept getting knocked up by other neighborhood strays like Stripesy and the Fancy Cat. Some of her kittens were sickly, and some we caught and took to the vet and placed in homes (The Lawgiver has two of her kittens, Milton and Byron, and Sarah's dad ansd step-mom have a third, Tulie). Recently TLG showed up in our yard with two more kittens, who we christened Dot and Dash. They were skittish as hell, and we couldn't get near them. We fed them and for a few days they slept in our yard. One day, Dot and Dash disappeared. The Girl cried for two nights straight but nobody saw them. Friday night, while I was out watching kickflicks, the Little Girl came back with Dash. Sarah and her brother, John, who was staying with us for a week, managed to catch them in a big animal carrier we'd borrowed a while back for this very purpose. The next day, Sarah's dad came to get John and take the cats to his vet in Philly, who dealt with feral cats. The plan was to get the mother fixed and release her back here where she was comfortable (there was no way she was adoptable) and see if the kitten could be socialized for adoption. Anyway, Sarah's dad called today and told us that The Little Girl had feline AIDS and had to be put to sleep. We'd noticed she was scraggly and looked weak but we thought it was due to her giving birth and nursing and being a stray, she's looked bad before after having a litter. Apparently she was in bad shape, so, they put her down. Fortunately, the kitten is okay, and we're going to try to socialize her and adopt her out, we're hoping we can find someone who wants her in our social group, and if not, we'll see what we can do through the vet.

Anyway, I'm just bummed out about it all, I know it's not the loss of a human being and that strays don't have a great shelf life and, hell, she wasn't even our cat, or a particularly nice cat (she bit Sarah's dad really badly when he tried to give her water, now he has to get tested for rabies), but we expected to have her back in the yard this week, eating our food and treating us like shit like old times. She was fun to have around and we liked her and always kept an eye out for her. We still have our fingers crossed that her missing kitten, will somehow reappear, but it isn't looking too good. It's a bit of a comfort to have the other kitten in safe hands, and to have kept the mother from suffering more.

So long, Little Nasty Girl Cat.

I just wanted to add this -- the last picture I got of the LG and her last two kittens, Dot and Dash (named for the patterns on their backs, although you can't tell here). She showed up only a couple months after we moved in here so she's always seemed like a part of the back yard.

As the lawgiver said, she sure made cute kittens.

i didn't even know there was such thing as feline AIDS. that's crazy.

sorry to hear about that. i understand the story completely...there were a bunch of kittens living in the alley beside my window last year and i was always late for classes because i was trying to make sure that they had some water or milk or food, just trying to take care of them. they, too, were feral and their mom was extremely skittish and just not too social or nice, but just knowing they were there was comforting and i felt some sense of obligation to them.

Yep, feline AIDS. My girlfriend works for an animal shelter and deals with this sort of thing on a daily basis. How sad. I'm gonna pet my cats now.

Sorry to hear about that guys. It's always tough no matter how odd the situation to lose an animal.
It's nice to know that you guys were a constant in her life and made sure she was as well taken care of as you could.

I think sometimes all relationships are difficult to end even when they are one-sided.
She sure did make some cute kittens though.

I think I will go spend some quality time with my 18 year old cat now and hand feed her processed swiss cheese. It makes her excessively flatulent, but what the hell, its her favorite.

My dad takes care of a few feral cats who hang around the trailer park where he lives, and his favorite was a big male named TeeTee. What was funny about TeeTee was that he was this big macho cat, yet he had these thick dark lines around his eyes that made him look like he was wearing mascara. He wasn't all that feral - he was mellow, never hissed or growled, and would even let most people people pet him if they approached him nicely. Some of my dad's neighbors didn't take too kindly to TeeTee and some of the other strays occasinally leaving kitty prints on their precious car, so they were known to give off "warning shots" with their bb gun (although they didn't exactly try hard to miss, if you get the picture). Well, after an extended absence, TeeTee showed up one day with a severely infected hole in his behind, so my dad took him to the human society where he works, and they found out he had contracted feline AIDS. There's no way to tell for sure if the bb pellet wound had anything to do with it, but it certainly couldn't have helped. My dad cried all night when they had to put him down.

Bottom line is that there are people like that who only add to stray animals' pain and suffering and people who provide at least a temporary haven from it. Thanks for being the latter.

Sorry for not posting much at all lately, but I've definitely been keeping up with your journal and wishing I could afford half of the stuff you talk about. Stay cool!

p.s.: I'm gonna be in the NY/NJ area on the weekend of Aug. 15...any cool comics related events I should try to check out?

On the cat end of things, at least Stripesy is still okay. I see him crossing the street a lot and it terrifies me, because the gypsy cab drivers (the drivers aren't gypsies, that's what they call the non-taxi cabs, oh, forget it, drive like lunatics and I keep waiting to come home one day to find him flattened in a gut bath. Anyway, we saw him yesterday and hit him up with his catnip fix, and of course, like a stupid human I talk to him about the Little Girl as if he called her that and had a human relationship with her. He just wanted drugs, and I wanted to talk nonsense to a cat. But we still have him roaming around. The kitten, Dash, is safe and sound and Sarah's dad will be picking him up later today. We don't know what;'ll happen to the kitten -- will he come back here for socializing until we find him a home? Will Sarah's step-mom fall in love with him and take a thrid cat? Will our friend Fletcher finally try to smuggle a cat into his no-pets apartment? Will Mayor Bloomberg just shut the hell up? Stay tuned.

Kaylum -- as far as comics events go, check a website called Egon (dot something, I'm so lazy). A really great resource for comic-related events throughout the country. If nothing else, hit Jim Hanley's Universe up on 33rd street if you're looking to shop for funnybooks. I think there's a pulp art show in Brooklyn, maybe at the Bklyn museum, poke around and look, I'm lazy. It's hot in NYC, and I'm still tired from Mocca.

I'll skip the sad talk, since I never recovered from my cat "running away" when I was a kid away on vacation.

The new Thing issue was really nifty. I love Ben going through a car wash. Most importantly, next issue: PASTE POT PETE~!

BTW, Ultimo Dragon debuts on SD! tomorrow night, although apparently it wasn't the world's greatest match against Shannon Moore.

The con is about $15.00 a day and it's mainly DC / Marvel guys but Stephen DeStefano will be there. So will Roddy piper. That may be worth the $$$

Yeah, I wanted to do this show as we had a nice time last year, but we never got invited and by the time I found out when it was apparently they were filled up. I thought it was weird that nobody from the show contacted us this year, as we have done the show twice before, and last year one of the guys running things liked us well enough to give us tickets to the WWF house show that night (the con is in the Garden, as was the event), so I thought for sure they'd contact us for this year's show. Oh, well. We do have a lot of work to do and Mocca was only last week, so it's okay and all. I really do have a lousy habit with cons, save for small press events like Mocca and SPX, I've rarely contacted a show about a table, I always figure if there's an interest in our attending someone would contact us, which is a goofy way of doing business. It's not like I'm angling for a free table or anything, I just have always worked with the attitude that someone wants me for a show or a job, and they'll call. I've always been bad at seeking things out, largely because of the fear of rejection thing that has plagued me for, oh, ever. Luckily we've remained busy through the years. End of tangent. End of post.

That is really sad. I too take care of a pile of stray cats who live around our apartment complex, and I cry every time one of them disappears permanently or dies. And yes, we name them all too.

Cat update

So, the surviving kitten (formerly known as, "Dash", know known as "Mullins" or "Moon" after Sarah's step-mon rechristened him after the comic strip character -- personally, I'd prefer "Kayo"), is now ensconced in our upstairs bathroom as part of a plan to socialize the little beast in order to have him placed in a home. The funny thing is, he doesn't seem to need to be socialized, he's a frickin' sweetheart. He's affectionate and playful and for god's sake I wish he'd stop crying all the time! I know you're lonely little fella, but if we open the door Mr Jinx will KILL YOU (Forgive the capitalization-transgression). Damn, I can't take a crying cat, it murders me. Stop, baby, stop! We can't get anything done today because we keep going in there to play with him and keep him company. Wish I had a laptop, I'd write on the can (it would be appropriate, in my case). Anyway, we have some prospects for potential new caretakers, so hopefully we'll be able to boot him out of here before we get too attached. I'm gonna go see him now. Good night.
